Along with Goo Goo Dolls fans around the world, we at Absolute Goo are excited about the drop of the band’s 9th studio album, aptly titled Something For The Rest Of Us. The album, which includes 12 new songs from the multi-platinum band, was recorded in 9 different studios, including in L.A. and at the band’s hometown studio in Buffalo NY.
Although the band (John Rzeznik, Robby Takac and Mike Malinin) have spoken about the record reflecting dark economic times and living in an era of uncertainty, fans who have been lucky enough to hear some of the album’s tracks live love it for one reason: It rocks.
Co-produced by the Goo Goo Dolls, along with Tim Palmer, Butch Vig, Rob Cavallo and John Fields, this album–more than any other to date–captures the energy, passion, and raw excitement that is a live Goo Goo Dolls show. It is a rich, layered tapestry of music, highlighted by some of the best production the Goos have had in years.
Mixed by the band’s touring sound engineer, Paul David Hagar, the album ranges from meaningful ballads to tightly wound, killer pop tunes, all reflecting the band’s amazing songwriting ability. “The sounds on the album were concocted mostly by me and Brad Fernquist, our touring guitarist. We went out and got a bunch of vintage amps and a bucket-load of old stomp boxes. We wanted to create unusual sounds by merging those things with modern technology,” Rzeznik said. It worked. The use of multiple guitars on the tracks result in a “sonic mosaic” creating a backdrop for solid rock songs that demonstrate why, after almost 25 years, the Goo Goo Dolls remain at the top of their game; ever evolving, constantly growing, still relevant.
