OXFORD, Miss. – The Goo Goo Dolls, one of the most durable and celebrated rock bands of the past two decades, comes to the University of Mississippi April 3 for a free concert in the Grove.

The concert begins at 5 p.m. on the Grove Stage with opening act Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. The show, which goes on rain or shine, is sponsored by the Student Programming Board and the Department of Campus Programming.

“We are excited that the Goo Goo Dolls are kicking off their spring tour, ‘Something for the Rest of Us,’ at Ole Miss,” said Jennifer Taylor, director of campus programming. “It is an amazing opportunity to have a band of their caliber, one that recently performed at the NFL Pro Bowl and the 2011 Orange Bowl, performing in the Grove.”

Since forming in 1986 in Buffalo, N.Y., the Goo Goo Dolls has enjoyed an amazing string of hits and accolades. The band’s first nationwide hit, “Name,” propelled the album “A Boy Named Goo” to sales of more than 2 million copies. The band’s other Top 10 hits include radio mainstays “Slide,” “Black Balloon,” a cover of Supertramp’s “Give a Little Bit” and “Iris,” which spent an amazing 17 weeks at No. 1 and nearly a year on Billboard’s singles chart.

The group’s 2005 hit “Better Days” was used by news outlets during their coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the band performed it a year later during pregame for the New Orleans Saints’ first game back in the Superdome.

The Goo Goo Dolls’ latest album, “Something for the Rest of Us,” came out in August 2010. The band’s accomplishments include four Grammy nominations, 13 consecutive Top 10 hits and more than 10 million albums sold.

A rising country-rock act, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors hails from Tennessee and has been popular throughout the Southeast since the group began touring in 2005. The band’s debut album, “Washed in Blue,” came out that year and scored placements on several TV series, including Lifetime’s “Army Wives,” Showtime’s “United States of Tara” and A&E’s “The Cleaner.”

The band’s latest album, “Chasing Someday,” was released last month.
