Goo Goo Dolls News & Info / Re: Miracle Pill Album Review
« on: September 16, 2019, 06:13 PM »
I've been listening to the album for the last couple of days now. Everyone was reviewing it so I think it's fair to share my opinion on it as well!

1. Indestructible - A very summery vibe goes through this song. It has the same immersive rythm as songs like The Pin or Souls In The Machine. It feels like Johnny really loves to play this on the guitar. Credits to the lovely little guitar part at the ending. A great album opener and a welcome heavier sound then we're used to nowadays. Minor detail is the chorus, could've been more original (Use Me?) 7/10

2. Fearless -  Without the chorus this song is nothing at all. The verses are just too bland, and sorry but those lyrics... he didn't really put effort in this at all. I had high hopes on this song, the studio updates suggested this would be a more heavier song. The verses with a guitar would have been way better. Chorus is simpel but catchy 5.5/10

3. Miracle Pill - Could've had a bit more grit, but I like the groove of this song. Again, a guitar would have been better than the leading piano, but hey it's a great tune overall. Still thinking it isn't the best single of the album. 6.5/10

4. Money Fame & Fortune - This is everything I want from the Goo Goo Dolls: own sound mixed with other influences. It's just SO original and groovy. Hands down one of their best songs ever. Love the backing vocals and the echo in John's voice. 10/10.

5. Step In Line - Robby's song on Boxes were absolutely awful to me. This song is so fresh and catchy, I really like the new more piano driven sound in this, the man is experimentating and it shows! 7/10

6. Over You - Classic John, but still really original and heartfelt. Could've had more depth lyric wise but hey, overall a great little song.  7/10

7. Lights - This is Goo Goo Dolls 2010 - now. Catchy, Genuine, Poppy, Hard when it needs to be, lovely guitar. One of the best songs they've put out since the 10's. This could've been a Something For The Rest Of Us type of song. I hope this will be the new single.  8/10

8. Lost - Epic, bombastic, Great tune. Chorus without the backing would be cooler but okay. Love how the verses and chorus is so different. Again a diverse tune. 7/10

9. Life's a Message - God I love the intro, the synth's and soundbits in it. Everything on this song fits Robby like a glove. 7/10

10. Autumn Leaves - I cried.  10/10

11. Think it Over - Reminds me of Lance Diamond (the choir). Could easy fit in Gutterflower. A guitar solo would be cool, but this is everything a 'Superstar Carwash fanboy' could wish for nowadays. 9/10

Summary: A great diverse album. It got its weaker songs (Fearless, Miracle Pill) but thats okay. Songs like Lights, Lost, Over You, Think It Over and especially Money Fame & Fortune rekindles my love for this band. They have explored new waters, and for the first time since Magnetic I can honestly say: This is Goo Goo Dolls, 100%. Magnetic was great but they were not yet 'there' - Boxes was a turn in that direction as well but more sophisticated, well thought and put together. Miracle Pill is the next chapter, and I've seen reviews: a lot of people love this, the single is doing great. We can be proud. For me this is out there with their best albums (Gutterflower - Magnetic, Dizzy Up The Girl - ...)

I dont really care for a rock album. That sound is not coming back because thats not where their headspace is at the moment. John said he didn't want to make the same album twice. I'm just really happy that they are making new music and I would love anything really. I was the one with the most criticism on their pop sound but you know what? I love it all. Magnetic is almost their best album after Gutterflower for me. I would love some songs with the sound of Big Machine, Truth is A Whisper but also Slow It Down, Bulletproofangel and even Reverse, Souls in the Machine.

Give me it and I'll love it for sure, because they own each genre.

My prayers have been heard! Got tickets and going to see them in Porto and Amsterdam (20 & 29 of July). Crazy how life goes... A year ago I gave up seeing them live and now seeing them twice in a week.

Goo Goo Dolls News & Info / Re: Dizzy Album Cover

Thank you for sharing this. There is something truly special about the album. From the artwork to the songs and single choices, they absolutely nailed that album and that album cover is an incredible kid happy accident. Dizzy is one of the best albums ever. Other notable artwork from the Goo Goo Dolls are:
A Boy Named Goo
Superstar Car Wash

The rest of the album covers aren’t quite as strong.

Something for the Rest of Us, Boxes, and Gutterflower are particularly weak.
I love the Gutterflower cover, its very mysterious, and the story behind it is really funny as well. I agree on Boxes and Something For The Rest Of Us. Funny to think of that they never had a cover with them as a band on it.

I have that box as well (love it). I was wondering, what is so exclusive about that box, because after that box those vinyl's were sold as singles almost immediately.

Gutterflower on vinyl would be a dream. I have Magnetic also, blue cover!

Definitely going to one of these 3 European shows, will be a hell of a trip but totally worth it in the end.

What a great topic, I admire your honesty in what some songs or albums mean to you, I like your writing style and I hope we will read more from you on the forum in the near future.
My rating will be on here soon.

''Johnny's low notes ever in the first verse of "It's Over" (his lowest ever, I think?)''

He hits similar notes in the verses of You Know What I Mean, but I love that kind of singing from him.

Which record would you like me to review next?

Absolutely love the box. Superstar Carwash is currently spinning.

If I'll see them live I definitely hope for the lesser popular Gutterflower songs (Up Up Up, Truth is A Whisper, What Do You Need?, It's Over) but I would also love to hear So Alive, Reverse, Souls In The Machine, Slow It Down, Caught In The Storm, One Night, Soldier etc. Just a lot.

I think I'm the only one but I dont really care for Slide, Broadway, Black Balloon, heard these songs thousands of times on CD, I know thats not the same but would love some variety in setlists.

Does this have anything to do with the RSD Vinyl Box? I feel pretty bummed with the ''1.000 copies'' thing if they are just going to release more individual albums...

Goo Goo Dolls News & Info / Alternative Albums [Fanmade]
« on: May 17, 2017, 04:19 PM »
I was just messing around with PS and decided to make alternative Goo Goo Dolls' albums. I'm planning on making more in the near future. All the selfmade albums have in common that the songs on it are similar in style, lyrics, messages etc.

NOTE: all songs, logo's, pictures and sounds I use belong to their righteous owner, I do not make profit out of any of these, it's just a hobby

Goo Goo Dolls - Pressure On The System (2017)

About this 'album'
All Goo Goo Dolls' songs about society, government, working class and the system. The picture used as cover is where 'Superstar Carwash' used to be. The backside is Broadway Auditorium in Buffalo (of the famous song Broadway)

Like I said I'm planning to make more in the near future. Tell me if you would buy this album and why (not)! If you have any suggestions hit me up and I'll try to create it.

Rebel Beat is one of their tightest songs ever, It's 100% John.

Thank you, it gives a nice perspective on how to look at the lyrics in another way. I just wish John wrote an actual chorus.

Goo Goo Dolls News & Info / Re: Thoughts on the EP?

I wonder how "Use Me" will be live.  The chorus is Ah Ah Ah instead of words.  Johnny can't be singing it a lot I don't think.   Plus, guitar is not strong in the song and Johnny loves to have a guitar in his hands.

Use Me is a song driven my guitar. Almost every part of this song is guided by a acoustic guitar. Songs who aren't based on guitar rythm (Lucky One, Reverse) are performed live. John even performs 'Slow it Down' without guitar. And about that 'ah ah' chorus, So Alive and Sweetest Lie both have a similar chorus and they have played that tons of times, so dont worry!
